Funky Dance Style - Locking

The locking dance style is known for its funky style, outrageous costumes and the locks and stops in the dance.

It was also the first real street style and it broke into TV, opening it up to a mass audience. It made the dancers the focus as The Lockers were given their own performance slots on popular TV shows.

The style that you develop for yourself as a locker is up to you. It will be influenced in part by factors such as your locking teacher or teachers, your favourite dancers and where in the world that you are.

What is important is that you enjoy what you are doing and that you feel you are comfortable dancing in the way. You should not feel uncomfortable doing things in that way or try to copy someone else's style bit for bit.

There is some learning to do. You should learn about locking from people that do it well and what sort of techniques are found in locking.

It does take some time to do this, because you are not one of The Lockers or immersed in the environment when locking was being created.

Take the time to learn locking. When you know the ideas behind locking then you can start trying out your own style and even bringing in your own moves into it.

It is hard to come up with your own style if you don't know what you're doing in the first place. So try and find a good teacher or a class you can learn from.

DVDs and videos can work as well though you don't get the same feeling or on-going sort of training environment that you would get inside a real class.

Inside a real class, you have a real person that you can ask questions and ask for guidance if you want it.
